Rehearsals

The first day of rehearsals means a whole bundle of nerves. The rehearsal camp is being held at Chiayi University, which is a beautiful campus that is clean and bright. While walking through the courtyard, the sweet sound of violins fills the air.

While helping out backstage and in the office, I get to observe the people who make up this orchestra and all the work that goes into it. In the office, the conductors and teachers were discussing the music pieces and composition. When they spoke about the beauty of the music and hummed the melodies out loud, it was clear how much passion they had about music. It is something that I had never really heard before, but now I am surrounded by people whose lives are dedicated to this art.

What is interesting and one of the best parts about the Asian Youth Orchestra is that it is made up of many different people who speak many different languages, but music is the one language that they all have in common.

A typhoon warning sent the stage team and the orchestra scrambling - a decision was made moments ago, to move up tonight's evening concert to the afternoon. But be it five hours earlier than plan, the team  was immediately at work, setting the stage like clockwork. A fully spirited orchestra was ready, on stage at 2:30 p.m. How about the weather's impact on audience attendance? The fact is no thunder or storm will ever match the enthusiasm that the people of Chiayi have showered on the AYO. In no time, crowds filled the concert hall of the Chiayi Cultural Centre. Today was a dress-down concert due to the last-minute changes causing adrenaline to rush. Our orchestra members donned their red polo shirts, not their formal ensemble attire. They looked nicely fired up to play. Then, Mr. Pontzious walked out on stage holding an umbrella over his head. Roars of laughter echoed throughout the hall. The Lucerne Festival

Lucerne, on a beautiful lakeside with a view of Mt. Piatus and the Swiss Alps, is a city that enjoys a long tradition of culture and music. Each summer culminates with the hosting of the famous Lucerne Festival. The Festival has its origins back in Triebechen’s “Concert de Gala” at the gardens of Richard Wagner’s villa. The concert back then in 1938 was conducted by Arturo Toscanini, who formed an orchestra with members of different orchestras and soloists from around Europe. It is the sentiment that the Lucerne Festival keeps very much intact today. Through August and September each year, it celebrates classical music, featuring resident ensembles and star soloists alongside guest performances of the likes of the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna Philharmonic. A hundred or so music events are held at the Culture and Congress Centre (KKL) located on the shore of Lake Lucerne. So, imagine how honoured we were that the Asian Youth Orchestra, too, held a place at this world-

See You Again

Yílù píng'ān. "Have a safe journey," the airport ushers and security officers at the Kaohsiung International Airport tell us as we head to board our plane. We said goodbye to our favourite place in Taiwan this morning. We will never forget your kindness and warmth. What a frantic two weeks it has been. Now, as we arrive and settle into our hotel after flying from Kaohsiung to Hong Kong, we look forward to a brand new week of rehearsals. See you again in Chinese is  zàijiàn , so  zàijiàn , Chiayi City. We will see you very soon when we return for our concert on July 29th. For now, here we are, Hong Kong. Hello, Hong Kong
